Profile Summary
Arturo Pineda Alcaraz (1916–2001) was a Filipino volcanologist, geologist, and geothermal energy pioneer. He helped demonstrate that underground heat associated with the Philippines’ volcanic geology could be developed as a source of electricity. His career connected scientific investigation, public service, volcanic-hazard monitoring, and energy development.
Alcaraz studied at the University of the Philippines before transferring to Mapúa Institute of Technology, where he earned his mining engineering degree in 1937. He completed a master’s degree in geology at the University of Wisconsin in 1941. His government service included work with the Bureau of Mines, the Weather Bureau, the Commission on Volcanology, and the National Power Corporation. He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 1982.
His legacy illustrates the contribution of field research and engineering to the development of local energy resources. Geothermal electricity is produced by bringing underground steam or hot fluids to the surface and using their energy in generating equipment. Developing it requires geological surveys, exploratory drilling, resource evaluation, and sustained environmental and operational management. Alcaraz helped build the scientific foundation for that industry in the Philippines.
